Since I graduated from the Faculty Of Fine Arts on Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun in my area of interests are everything which ends its life, in its first function, especially clothes and textiles. My intention is to start for this degraded matter new purpose, give them a new quality. My diploma work in 1983 in a painting workshop was connected only with my mother’s wardrobe. There were dresses, blouses, and pullovers which I was stretching on rectangular or square frames. In this way, all my own art beginning was consisting of constructing objects, partly half-surrounded, with destroyed clothes. It always was all things, I had never used the cut fragments, to not creating typical collages or assemblages, which I was always avoiding. In the later art work, I used a technique with addition only once in cycle “Last farewells”. But in those days, more than 30 years ago, when I was choosing this exploited by the human clothes I had an awareness that I was using finished things. In clothes used in my art works, apart from the obvious signs of destruction, I was looking for some other features, which I was thinking are interesting additions – it was usually patches, stitched holes, inserts from other textiles (like for example stripes, polka dots), lace or buttons. This determined to a big extent about my choices, because this time my basic aesthetic values were: used textiles, dirt stains and aforementioned additions.
Then, something about 5 years later, in my area of interests there were also used from everyday life bed sheets, blankets, and primary tablecloths. Later, after 10 years of artistic activities, I decided to paint pictures on this type of background, which were not associated with this type of artistic treatment. On my exhibition in 1993 titled “Tablecloths” showed not only dirty table settings stretched on canvases but this with put color on it too. Firstly I had big doubts. I was wondered if I am doing right when I was interfering in something which I was earlier seeing as undeniable, degraded beauty. That’s why I introduce color very faintly. It appears not very often as a compliment for another existing spot from soup, coffee or tea. With the passage of months, the paint laid with brush or spatula starts to appear on bed sheets, curtains, towels, floor coverings, oilcloths, foils and tarpaulins. This situation coincided with the defense of the gastrointestinal qualifying first degree in fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw in 1993. At the exhibition accompanying the conductor, I presented a large part of the work of the “Tablecloths”, but also several other used blankets and sheets. Prof. Wojciech Sadley - one of the reviewers and studio manager painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts UMK, with whom I had the privilege of working, described my work as referring to the martyrdom of matter, very close to the ideology of arte povera. My observations on this subject were identical ever since the artistic diploma because actually my mature consciousness developed through the prism of things exploited, abandoned and damaged. I never comprehend my artwork as a process aimed at the target aesthetic.
After qualification guide my work began to fill with paint in the increasingly dense and more and thicker texture. Fabrics, which was pulling on the frame is often experienced poor condition; riddled, torn. I stick underneath them when the destruction was so great that it was difficult for them to paint. On such sleepers painted without any technological processes, I wanted it, that was preserved fragility of matter, her destroyed face. This type of work I presented in 1999 during the opening of a second qualifying stage at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. Fascination with color, as an addition to the reclaimed did not last too long, because in 2001 I started to minimize its use to almost completely eliminate. Then I took up the creation of works of a different nature and tried to limit the use of clothing as such as before. I took the smaller forms. Within my interests appeared worn underwear and accessories - underwear, socks, ties, caps and other minor items of clothing. In this special time for me was a big solo exhibition titled "Construction in destruction" at the Wozownia Art Gallery in Torun. There I presented all my latest work of several parallel cycles created: "Pants "; "Socks"; "Aprons" and "Ties". For them I cut properly aligned frames with irregular shapes, giving them not anatomical forms but autonomous ones. As a result of this treatment, it turned out that often the form of the finished work was not always like used underwear or fancy goods, particularly in relation to the holes in socks. By contrast, the work of the "Pants" way intersection of linen and cotton cloth tension force favors the departure of an original shape adapted to the human anatomy. That is why I used the term "form of autonomous". Incidentally - the fascination of this kind of objects takes my attention to the present day, though no longer with so much intensity as several years ago. This perception and realization of works of art coincided with the date of the defense of the gastrointestinal qualifying second degree. It took place three years after the opening of the hearing on the day, due to prolonged illness and in connection with her annual leave to improve his health. At the exhibition closing cable on 23th of May 2002 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, I presented a selection of works from the exhibition in Torun, and later formed.
For the year 2003, after the habilitation proceeding, I fell a large kind of breakthrough in my work. Well, from the exhibition in Poznan City Gallery Arsenal, which took place in autumn began presenting spatial objects of the "Pyramid". Until now I have done more than twenty works from this series, which usually have fairly large dimensions. I use them to construct used fabrics, usually curtains, bed linen and tablecloths. Working with 2003, it stepped object consisting of eighteen degrees, based on 2.20 meters on a square plan and a height of 180 centimeters. At the same time, I constructed a "column" to folding up of various, consisting of dozens of modular rectangular elements with dimensions 30x30x8 centimeters. After exposure Arsenal their work, I presented with a set of very similar, in 2004, three other significant places: at the Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art in Slupsk; Bielska BWA Gallery in Bielsko - Biala and galleries Open Studio in Krakow. For the same year accounted for another significant exhibition at the Polish Institute in Rome. There I presented a set of works relating to the cycle of the garment and the "Last farewells”. The first set formed stretched specially cut ties to the used clothes, in the same way as I have done with underwear and gallantly to work to give autonomous features. Cycle "Last farewells " formed flatwork using sashes with funeral wreaths with elements of inclusions painting. To my surprise, the work of this series met with tight interest. In 2005 he continued his consecutive spatial projects of the "Pyramid". Then the object was created with four triangular walls on a square base with a side length of 2.5 meters. The work I presented for the first time in 2005 in the Gallery of Critics "show" in Warsaw on display titled "przeCHODZAC". Pyramid filled almost the entire space of the underground gallery room. This created space limitations for the audience, which was my intention when I got the proposal to implement this very place. Another important experience for me as an artist was to invite me to organize in the same year an individual exhibition at the Museum of Papermaking in Duszniki Zdroj. There I presented soft work of disintegrating matter and selection of cycles, which became the basis for the dissertation. Later, in the next two years, I developed my new ideas related to the "Pyramid". At this time, I formed conical work clothes stacked, has no wooden structures. In this way, I referred to my first, small this type of object that I set at the 1989 exhibition "Tumult" in the basement of the Town Hall of Torun. Then it was the episode in my work, which developed after 14- years. Later, to construct my "Pyramid" I use a different kind of materials, including glass, but also various types of toys and dried vegetable flakes. One of these objects was "Pyramid IX" in 2008. Made of wood, vertical design and four horizontal glass shelves, where I set all sorts of kinds of trinkets and worn cloth folded into cubes. It showed a large solo exhibition at the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the creativity in the Castle Gallery in Wroclaw. I presented there are other objects with the use of glass containers, like aquariums, which have placed the dried husks of onions, garlic, and other vegetables. In this way, the sphere of my interests came into junk food as an apposition to the problem of the degradation of matter and debris of everyday life. In 2008 I also realized another major exhibition at the Wozownia Art Gallery in Torun. In addition to the work to hang on the wall, I cut the large size "Pyramid" built with dozens of transparent 120-liter garbage bags filled with clothing and fabrics. At the apex of the stack, as if waiting to be deported to landfill, flashed the names of patterns and colors in the individual plays in all bags.
In 2009, the exhibition titled "Contrasts" in Gallery of Action in Warsaw, where together with me participated chosen my students realized "Pyramid" shaped Indian conical wigwam from entering inside. In the same year, I presented her artistic concept for the solo exhibition "Expose - Stelt aus" in the gallery Atelier du Nord in Fribourg, Switzerland. The exposure was associated with a week-long stay in the city together with a selected group of students who presented their work in the city as part of the show "Une touche de Copernic”. During their stay, gathering photographic materials for the work undertaken as part of the series "Ephemeris" and the object of the "Pyramid " based upon the items of clothing collected by the organizer. Moreover, in the outdoors, I presented a set of works titled "Trees - correspondence". It consisted in the fact that in Torun I made ten pictures of tree trunks, and Freiburg as long strips of output imposed in the form of rings on some of my trunks. In 2010, I took up the creation of irregular shaped half-surrounded objects, in which I used artificial flowers in the cemetery garbage, included in the series "Last farewells". The first time I presented this type of work an individual exhibition titled "Jesien.nie" at the Museum of Dobrinland in Rypin, and then, in a more extended form, in the gallery Old Slaughterhouse in Poznan. Exhibition in Poznan was a joint demonstration with the students, which invited to participate in order to promote their creative attitudes.
At the end of 2011, exhibitions in the Wozownia Art Gallery and the Center for Contemporary Art Signs of the Time in Torun I used on their premises footage, which documents reflect my fascination with an older woman, who in her life surrounds with the destructed and trinkets - artificial flowers, Souvenir - covered years dust and heaps of clothes lying on the furniture. Lonely woman, living in a small village, ramshackle house, I met on the occasion of the organization of three interdisciplinary retreats students of Nicolaus Copernicus University, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk and Poznan Academy of Fine Arts in the Municipal Cultural Center in Lipno in the years 2009 - 2011. For me, it was a very important experience in my creativity. Just from these three open-air use of video recording, it became for me more and more important. Consequently, fascination with the life of a lonely woman began to constantly record the existing situation, which I write in the form of photographic prints and film materials, also in relation to other I encountered interesting people to me. The first such public demonstration I presented in Freiburg, as briefly described above. All these situations fall into a cycle of "Ephemeris". They are a record of selected phenomena passing on what I encounter, without my interference. These are, for example - abandoned on benches, fences and trees in the parks clothes or carried by the wind pieces of foil, paper, etc.. The exhibition titled "…i must say it too" in Wozownia Art Gallery in 2011 referred to the situation existing in and around the home of an elderly woman from Lipno. They were three photographs and objects, including the one that I received from the heroine of the exhibition - "Stones from the sky". The woman tells the various stories, which are usually colored describing his life, but also about the fact that collects stones and stores them in different places in her farmyard. She says here that fall straight from the sky, just the area of the farm. They told stories became the idea for the exhibition, and its title is a quote from her monologues, usually starting with the return - I must say it. At the collective exposure titled “622 falls of Bungo" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of ZPAP Centre for Contemporary Art in Torun, I presented the large-sized objects, as another work from the series "Pyramid" built with bales of clothing worn inside filled with other garments and textiles. I have placed on its top monitor with video recorded in the home of my friend from Lipno. I showed a set of ten prints documenting the phenomenon of illicit trafficking of clothes on the beach of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Rome. I was fascinated by this phenomenon size clothes imposed on themselves by itinerant traders. Another, slightly different design, but which fits into my interest in recording the existing situation was an exhibition titled "Crying" in a small exhibition space in the Wozownia Art Gallery in 2011. The pretext for the organization of the exhibition was a series of pictures taken in a forest enclave in the Klodzko Valley, near Miedzygorze. In 2012, I came across mysterious-looking tall pine trees, with trunks dripping along with the resin. Photographs, which I presented at the show are a selection of fragments of those situations that I found at the time. When a year later arrived at the same place, with surprise I could not find these team trees, focused on the characteristic of my space. Then there are two records of movies, recorded in the "secret garden" - "Roaming" and "Searching".
Quite another show, referring to my fascination with small parts of our wardrobe was in 2013 the show in an unusual place, which is the kiosk. Association House of Culture "Weglin" Lublin invited me to a show in the "Kiosk with Art", to enter his idea to the idea of a software project. It was based on the need to use in its implementation of things lent by the residents of the estate - the regulars home culture. To "Kiosk with Art" there were invited artists from Polish and foreign, whose works arise at the interface of disciplines, showing different facets of art, while not leaving the viewer without explanation. The kiosk I presented an exhibition titled "Roaming" in which I used brought by residents of different hats. The important thing was that the exhibition in the "Kiosk with Art" could be seen at any time of the day, the inspection of the outside, always illuminated the interior. An important exhibition was a show of my work in the Gallery BWA in Olsztyn in 2014. There I presented several sets of works and objects. I want to mention here to install the facility in the form of a writing desk and books, which I inherited after my dead friend - a 106-year-old woman. I gave the form of a conical object system. In this way, not only I developed the idea of the "Pyramid" because so far the vast majority of all the works were built with fabrics and clothes. In addition, there's a new thread here because of a reference to the used items received from a particular person, with whom I maintained close and friendly relations. I think that created a kind of epitaph relating to the deceased old lady. In no other way object not have been possible if not for her gift. On the same show, I referred to death as a phenomenon in another way through a cycle titled "Last farewells”. Earlier work takes the form of a small two-dimensional and three-dimensional work using artificial flowers. Set of four major works from Olsztyn size 173 x 97 centimeters, it prints on canvas images of neglected graves. For the prepared canvas I attached the elements found in the cemetery dustbins. Interesting to me photograph the graves in various locations Poland and abroad. This is for me a special dimension in relation to the reclaimed as this, which not only loses its original form but also is a testament of people passing away, who surrounded our life. They were near or far. The development of this series of works took place a few months later at an exhibition in the Gallery Szyperska in Poznan. There have presented eight half-surrounded similarly constructed objects. It was an interesting reference for my thoughts, locating my work in the context of not only the fragility of the material but also human life and burial sites. Also in 2014, I realized an important exhibition, which took place in the Gallery of Primus Lviv. For me it was a short circuit symbolic buckle series "Ephemeris", referring to the first experience with the concept presented five years earlier in Freiburg. Lviv I presented a performance, a set of photographic prints from the records of the city and several objects with the use of clothing, annexing them equipment gallery.
A very important event in my artistic life was inviting me to join me in the exhibition accompanying the International Triennial of Tapestry in the Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz in 2004. It was an exhibition titled "Oblicza Tkaniny - Textile Images" in the Patio Gallery in Lodz, with several notable artists dealing with textile threads in his work. It happened, after several years of thought on the fabric in terms of its uniqueness took part in two exhibitions of competition in the Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz in 2010. They were 11 National Exhibition of Tapestry and 9 National Exhibition of Miniature Textiles. From the very beginning of my work, textiles were the most important theme, but had not I considered this in terms of typing in the tradition of the fabric as a phenomenon in art. Presentation of my work at exhibitions in Lodz became the new opening, but with absolute respect for the sense that I prevailed so far, it is of interest destruct. The confirmation of the reasonableness of my long struggle with the textile matter was an invitation myself as one of the twenty representatives on the 14 International Triennial of Tapestry in the Central Museum of Textiles in 2013. This happened to me not only an additional challenge, awareness-raising but the fact that my work falls under the category of textile art. Following this path, I started to be interested in such places art in which I could arrange bigger projects that annexing its equipment makes it become subordinate destructs. I refer to the large quantities of used fabrics and clothes that have served me to build spatial objects of the "Pyramid". The first attempt of measuring this problem was the exhibition dedicated to the memory of Jan Berdyszak in Wozownia Art Gallery in Torun in January 2015. Then, in the exhibition, in which he participated four artists associated with the Faculty of Fine Arts UMK, was the annexation of several columns and dressing their clothes from my archive. The installation in the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Wloclawek has become an upgrade of this type of concept. In April 2015, I arranged the eight pillars in the exhibition room. I wrapped them worn clothing and fabrics, creating a set of monumental works, as pillars in the gallery are much thicker than those in the Wozownia Art Gallery. In this way, a set of different colors, spatial objects, which strove for it to mutually distinguished from each other. As a result, in the gallery there arose columns in distinguishing themselves from one another colors. From white through yellow, red, blue the orange, violet, green to black. I've never managed to build such an installation in the gallery, in which space could exist as the work of individual and unique.
A significant range, in some sense separate, although formally referring to the design of my activity in the implementation of the object, there is interest in performance. The first beginnings of my experiences with those of performative took place a long time ago, but for reasons beyond my control, for several years I have not been able to break down the barriers of direct contact with the customer during the creative process. A very important aspect of getting straight approach towards the realization of the performance was the idea of creating, together with a group of active student event called "Tuuu Performance" - Nationwide Meeting Performance in the gallery "S" in Torun. My first performative action took place in 1995 during one edition of the festival. The second, more serious, the experience has become action-day Performance "Second Hand" 1996 Dziekanka Gallery in Warsaw with the participation of outstanding Polish artists, e.g.: Zbigniew Warpechowski, Jan Świdziński, Julian Raczko and Cezary Staniszewski. Ten years after that event, there came the idea to reactivate student meetings focused on the presentation of the activities of a quasi-theatrical and performative from different art schools. In 2007 was the first year of meetings, which in three years has transformed the Festival Performance "Circle of Time", together with a proposal to transfer this idea to the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun. It's very important for me and the organizational - artistic experience of my life began to result in the emergence of new ideas, giving impetus for further action. Such action has the characteristics of performing was the realization of "Movements" at the XI Meetings Arts in Pszczyna, taking place in the city in 2011. The project consisted of collecting garbage at the cemetery a few dozen bouquets or single artificial flowers at the cemetery garbage in Pszczyna. These flowers are placed to the small boxes them with information about their place of origin - the name of the cemetery, placed in selected locations in the center of the city. Because of the inability to assign picked flowers (in fact already degraded to destructs through their submission to the landfill) to a specific person, the idea of their place in the public space was a universal treatment. As the universe was supposed to be an excuse for remembering their dead, while the daily trek of their family or friends on the busiest parts of the city. In the context of performing to my interests, I was invited to the next edition of the "Bydgoski Spichlerz Sztuki" - International Festival of Performance Art in the years 2012 - 2015. In short, I want to bring two actions from 2013, because they fit in a distinctive way of the nature of my work. On the second "Bydgoski Spichlerz Sztuki" I presented the action with a large number of old tablecloths and napkins, which I wrapped one of the pillars in the Old Market. Then, during the VII Festival of Performance "Circle of Time" in Torun used a large amount of garbage collected earlier, gathered on the sidewalks and in parks within Torun. A year later, at the next edition of the "Circle of Time" action done titled "Cuddle cloth" using clothing formed in several spheres and initiate a game of football. During the few-minute interaction with the audience bundles of clothing, they began to surface and "pitch" began chaotically cover clothes. Also, in 2014 I made the operation of the clothing in the gallery Primus Lviv, as one of the components of the exhibition of my work. There I formed one large-sized ball that the ceiling in one of the gallery rooms. During the performance, I hit tight fists like a boxer, in this large bag of clothing. I wanted this to a package on a line balanced in the direction of the audience. Managed to establish interaction and as a result of strong blows from different sides, the contents of the bale began after several minutes, empty, to the end there is only hanging rope. Clothing remains scattered among the audience. At the IX Festival of Performance "Circle of Time" in 2015 I presented the action relating to my video recordings - the so-called. existing situation, I mentioned when discussing his earlier work. The starting point for the idea was my fascination with an older woman, the director of the shelter in Miedzygorze who daily travels after several kilometers - going and coming down from the shelter located high above the village center. The video was referring to a woman hiking equipment and attic shelters overwhelmed by the great formless due to the continuous accumulation of different subjects. Anyone interested viewers can watch the 30-minute video recording moving for me, because the tablet, which I played a record, put on the back, wandering the premises CSW in Torun.
I was a curator of an exhibition „Best Diplomas” at the course of Painting at District Museum, The Eskens` House (1994) in Torun; a mentor to Students` Scientific Association Gallery S (1995-2002) and head of Intermedia Visual Art Department (2007-2008). In the years 2009-2011 I have organized three interdisciplinary Plein air meetings in Municipal Centre for Culture in Lipno, with the participation of students of Nicolas Copernicus University, Academies of Fine Arts in Poznan and Gdansk. It was also my initiative to make exhibitions of students of Nicolas Copernicus University at the Gallery of Action (Galeria Działan) in Warsaw and Atelier du Nord in Freiburg in 2009. Another of my ideas, not directly related to teaching, is „Giartino- The Garden of Arts” Festival. The Festival, organized from 2011, is a place of an interdisciplinary meeting of students from various Fine arts universities/academies, not only limited to Poland. Up till now the students that attend came from Academies of Fine Arts in Lwow, Banska Bystrica, Krakow, Gdansk and Technical University in Poznan as well as the University of Zielona Gora. The event takes place in two places: at the Voivodship Centre for Culture and at the Department of Intermedia Visual Art of Nicolas Copernicus University, especially at the large garden that surrounds it. The idea of the Festival is, that the participants are to make their works during the stay in Torun, in reference to the nature they are facing. Their works are interdisciplinary- among them are objects, installations, paintings, video realizations and performances.
Essential part of my organizational activity are my ideas and initiatives not related directly to my didactic work at Nicolas Copernicus University. Among the most important of them is creating my private gallery Near Vistula (Galeria Nad Wisla) in 1991, which stays under my sole management and works constantly until the present day. Due to to the fact of limited working space- consisting of two rooms, a 30 sq. meters in total - the exhibitions and events organized there are individuals or small collective ones. Up to date, more than 170 exhibitions took place in the Gallery, some of them inspired by this odd place, situated far from the city, surrounded by family gardens, just a few steps from the Vistula river. Most of the authors of those works were students or young artists from polish and abroad Fine Arts schools. By that fact, the Gallery is a very suitable and proper place for artistic beginners to present their works for the first time in public and to exchange ideas with other people from different artistic universities/academies. Some of the exhibitions made by students of Nicolas Copernicus University were their diplomas work. Thus, the Near Vistula Gallery plays a significant role also in terms of didactics of Fine Arts Faculty of my Alma Mater. Another, very important part of my activity was establishment (together with two other persons) in 1992 Foundation of Artistic Training „and…” (Fundacja Praktyk Artystycznych „i…”), which was working very dynamic until 2001. The Foundation organized two substantial cycles of exhibitions: National Meeting of Creators and Easter Exhibitions. I was a vice-president of that Foundation till 1999. In the years 1991-1996 I worked at Higher School of Fine Arts „Schola Posnaniensis” in Poznan; in the school year 1995/1996, I was a Deputy Director for Art. I was also a curator of the National Art of Youth Exhibition „Status Quo” at the Centre for Polish Sculpture in Oronsko (1996); a member of editorial team of Torun - based magazine Artistic and Literacy Review (Przeglad Artystyczno-Literacki), which was issued in the years 1996-1999; in addition to that, I was a Deputy Manager and Manager of the Occupational Therapy Workshop of the Brother Albert Foundation (2001-2002).
The decision that had a significant influence upon my personal development, was starting cooperation with National Children Fund in Warsaw in 1994 (which last till today). This non-profit organization is promoting young, talented kids from all Poland in various kinds of activities, art including. In this particular scope (visual art) I do consult the scholarships being granted every year; I do also conduct Plein air workshops for the visual artists within Holiday Interdisciplinary Meetings of the National Children Fund. Another very important success of mine is the creation of the Festival of Performance, starting in 2007, which from 2011 is also international. The Festival is from the start a place of meeting for polish and abroad students and young artists, thus it may be considered as a platform of exchange creative ideas of all people particularly involved in the performance. Up until now, the participants were students of: Nicolas Copernicus University (also outside Fine Arts Faculty), The Fine Arts Academies in Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Lodz, Poznan, Szczecin, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University and Zielona Gora University. Initially, for three years, the Festival took place at the Department of Intermedia Visual Art of Nicolas Copernicus University; starting from 2010 it exists is Centre of Contemporary Arts in Torun as The Festival of Performance „Circle of time”. The name refers to the movement and time. The performance itself touches these ideas, as they are immanent for that kind of art, yet one must remember that those ideas- circle and time- can be understood much widely. Every year, a small group of well-known artists is being invited by me to participate in the Festival in order to verify the state of the „young” performance stage. It is a way to make confrontation of attitudes, exchange of ideas as well as discussion and creative dialogue of generations. Since 2011 the attendants are also from abroad- up till now they came from the USA, Ukraine, Portugal and Germany. Despite the long-lasting tradition of Torun, visible so much in the Medieval city structure, as well as the large artistic environment, the performance is a relatively insignificant kind of art in our town. Torun is very closed, hermetic place, both for consumers of art as well as authorities, whose responsibility should be the encouragement of all kind of cultural initiatives, conducted by persons, foundations, associations, etc. And yet, many times happens, that financially supported are pseudo-artistic, expensive projects that responding low public needs, instead of more ambitious events, that- for example- are aiming to start a discussion about the current human condition. The „Circle of time” is constantly increasing its scope. All the things that were established within hardly ten years are of significant importance to teaching processes of the Department of Intermedia Visual Art of Nicolas Copernicus University, also in reference to diploma graduate works that are being conducted under my supervision.
